Who better to give you ‘the tour’ of this beautifully transformed space than its proud new owner, Sharon. Read on to find out how she worked with Summit Kitchens to design and renovate the kitchen of her dreams on Melbourne’s stunning Mornington Perninsula.

Sharon: My original kitchen was built in the early 1980′s. The horrid wooden cupboards felt tired and old. The original cupboard space was poorly designed and the kitchen felt crowded and was very dysfunctional. Only one person could be in the kitchen cooking at one time.

In designing the new kitchen, I wanted functionality of space and a fresh contemporary feel. I wanted to create a feeling of more space, and provide a light, bright area that would be pleasurable to use and form the center of the house. Also, having a large Great Dane and kids, I wanted a kitchen that was easy to clean and durable.

The island bench was widened and is now a fantastic multi-purpose area for kids to sit and do homework while I can cook; work on my computer; and also entertain.

The extended benchtop has created a sense of space and also provides extra large cupboard space undernearth. Draws were added to improve storage and wide-open cupboards are a clever addition to store large kitchen appliances.

I wanted to mix texture through use of the rugged concrete benchtops, together with matt finish draws and cupboards and textured large tiles as a splashback.

What makes this kitchen special to me, is the sense of space; the modern feel, but homeliness and functionality. Updated kitchen appliances are fantastic and the smart extra storage space. I love the waterfall rugged concrete and the large textured tiles are easy to clean and a lovely complement to the concrete benchtops.

“…I have received many complements so far and the workmanship and finish is of a high quality…”

The original pantry was knocked down to generate a built-in oven/microwave area that is highly functional. Removing the free-standing oven has allowed for a streamline look and a larger six plate cooktop. The in wall microwave and oven are a perfect size and the dishwasher is semi-integrated.
